During my 5 month stay in Mauritius, I visited a lot of beaches. If I’m honest every beach I visited was absolutely beautiful, but I’ve selected a few of my favorite beaches in Mauritius by region.

Best beaches in Mauritius by region

  • North Coast Beaches
    • Grand Baie
    • Pereybere Beach
  • West Coast
    • Flic en Flac Beach
    • Tamarin Beach
  • East Coast Beaches
    • Ile aux Cerfs
    • Belle Mare
  • South Coast Beaches
    • Le Morne Beach
    • Blue Bay Beach

North Coast: Grand Baie beach

Grand Baie beach has soft white sand and crystal clear waters, however, it’s not the best beach in Mauritius for swimming as there are a number of boats that are docked in the small bay. Despite that, it’s still stunning and is the perfect place to chill out. The beach is lined with street food vendors which provides the perfect opportunity for sampling the local cuisine. SuperU shopping complex is also a stone’s throw away for anyone who would like to combine a day of chilling out at the beach with a spot of shopping. Grand Baie is also an excellent place to begin an excursion for Gunner’s Quoin, Flat Island, Round Island, or Serpent Island as well as exploring the northern part of Mauritius.

North Coast: Pereybere beach

Pereybere beach is quiet and shady first thing in the morning

Pereybere is one of Mauritius’s most beautiful and well-known beaches. This particular beach can be found between Grande Baie and Malheureux. The beach itself is located in a beautiful, but tiny bay where the waters are still and crystal clear. Like many of the beaches in Mauritius, the water is quite shallow making it perfect for children and swimmers alike. Pereybere beach is one of my favorite beaches in Mauritius, not only because of its beauty but it had one of the best vibes. On a Sunday, Pereybere beach is a popular spot for locals who bring their drums, music, and food for a day of festivities by the beach. If you like to people watch and want to get a taste of Mauritian culture, Pereybere beach is the place to be on a Sunday. However, I would recommend getting to the beach early to secure a good spot. If you prefer quieter vibes then visit Pereybere beach during the week or first thing in the morning.

West Coast: Flic en Flac beach

Flic en Flac is located along the west coast of Mauritius. It’s now the second most sought-after destination in Mauritius for tourists and locals. The beach in Flic en Flac is hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius due to its 8km of uninterrupted coastline. Its beach is one of coral and sand so be sure to bring sea shoes with you in order to explore the beach comfortably. There are many food vendors at the top end of the beach, so there’s no need to think about packing a picnic or lunch. Flic en Flac is also popular due to its location; being on the west coast makes it a prime location for visiting both the north and south of the island. Due to its popularity, there are plenty of services and activities available in Flic en Flac to cater to every kind of visitor.

West Coast: Tamarin Beach

Although a stone’s throw away from Flic en Flac, Tamarin is less touristic in comparison to its neighbor. And unlike many of the other beaches, Tamarin is not protected by a barrier reef, so this is one of the few places suitable for surfing on the island. For the month I was staying in Tamarin, I visited the beach almost every day and I found that the appearance of the beach changed daily. Sometimes the beach was decorated with seaweed and the sea milky in complexion as the waves kicked up the sand. And other days the waters were calm and crystal clear. Tamarin beach definitely has a “wild” appearance in comparison to the more pristine beaches of Mauritius, but I felt this added to its charm. Although Tamarin is quiet in comparison to other areas there are still a number of activities to do, including kayaking, surfing, and swimming with dolphins.

East Coast: Ile aux Cerfs

Ile aux Cerfs, also known as Deer Island, is a stunning island off the east coast of Mauritius and is home to more than 100 acres. The island used to be known for its deer inhabitants but now is more famous for its beautiful beaches and unspoiled nature. Famous for its white beach, tranquil lagoons, and water sports activities, Ile aux Cerfs is perfect for families of all ages and makes it an excellent place for sun-soaked days in nature. The island is well-equipped with restaurants and bars to allow you to spend all day here without the need to travel for food.

I visited Ile aux Cerfs by taking a catamaran cruise to the island, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The cruise included a simple BBQ lunch with unlimited drinks. We then had a couple of hours to spend on Ile aux Cerfs. I opted to go parasailing and then spend the remaining time chilling on the beach. The seas temperature at Ile aux Cerfs was delightfully warm. We then visited the Grand River South East (GRSE) waterfall and then stopped for a spot of swimming somewhere off the coast. If I’m honest I would rather skip the spot of swimming to spend longer on Ile aux Cerfs, but I would still recommend the cruise nevertheless.

East Coast: Belle Mare

Belle Mare is another stunning beach in Mauritius. It’s also the place where the famous Lux hotel is located. Belle Mare is frequented mainly by locals who visit during weekends to take in the sun and the sea. It’s a fantastic destination to go to if you’re looking to spend a relaxing day full of local culture. If you are looking for something interesting to do whilst in Belle Mare, the undersea walk is the perfect way to kick start the day followed by relaxing on the beach.

South Coast: Le Morne Beach

Le Morne Beach has to be one of the quieter beaches in Mauritius, located in the southwest of the island. It offers stunning views of Le Morne mountain in the background. After I hiked up Le Morne mountain, the beach was the perfect place for me to chill out afterward. The beach itself is long so perfect for beach walks. However, as Le Morne beach is less touristy there are only a couple of food vendors who closed quite early whilst I was at the beach. Therefore, I would recommend bringing enough snacks and drinks with you to last the day.

I took a long nap on the beach after exhausting myself with that hike. There aren’t many eateries or bars in the area, and I only came across a couple of street food vendors. I would recommend stocking up on snacks and bringing a picnic with you if you are planning on visiting Le Morne Beach.

South Coast: Blue Bay

Blue Bay is a small gem in the southeast of Mauritius, which has been declared a nature reserve. Only ten minutes away from the charming town of Mahbourg, Blue Bay is one of the top snorkeling places within the islands. Blue Bay offers a range of chances to take in the seabed and soak up the area’s tropical beauty, which the mass tourism facilities don’t yet suck up. Activities include taking the glass bottom boat in the Marine Park. I did this and was lucky enough to see giant sea turtles. It’s also the perfect spot for snorkeling and diving. Check out some of the activities available in Blue Bay.

Conclusion: What are the best beaches in Mauritius?

As I previously mentioned every beach I visited in Mauritius had its own unique charm and was absolutely beautiful. Therefore, no matter what beach you visit you will not be disappointed. One thing I love about Mauritius is that all beaches are public, so if like me you love to take long beach walks you really don’t have to worry about stumbling onto private land. Additionally, all of the beaches are well maintained with toilets and shower facilities, which is another added bonus. However, not all beaches have
